Pa te aroha/ Compassion"On January 21st of 2017, the day after I take the oath of office, Americans will finally wake up in a country where the laws of the United States are enforced. We are going to be considerate and compassionate to everyone. But my greatest compassion will be for our own struggling citizens." Donald Trump

We are not all paddling the same waka, but we are all facing the same storm...

We don't know what each other's waka have been like. Some of you probably enjoyed the time away from school. Others might have found it really hard. Some of you might have faced really tough situations during lockdown. Others might have thrived with their families. This week, when you meet excitedly with your friends, don't assume you know their stories over the last several weeks. Show compassion. Pay attention to that person in your class who has always been a bit quieter, or is new, or seems a bit lonely. Get to know them. Be compassionate. Don't make offensive jokes about things you might not understand. Be compassionate. Give yourselves time to settle back into the routine of school. Show self-compassion. Communicate clearly and honestly. We can break down walls of misunderstanding by doing this.

Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa

Let us keep close together, not wide apart

This whakatauki speaks to the importance of keeping connected, of maintaining relationships and dialogue so that we can keep moving forward together.

COMPASSION.
